Abstract

Previously the world has experienced some pandemics such as variola, black plague, cholera, Spanish flu, typhus, Asian influenza, HIV/AIDS, SARS-CoV-1, MERS-CoV and ebola that have had destructive medical, economic and social effects. As of 2020 and 2021 the world is experiencing the SARS-CoV-2 (corona) virus that is known as the Covid-19 pandemic. The inability to find an anti-viral therapy that has a proven recuperative property for the prevention and entreating of Covid-19 makes symptomatic supportive intervention the only treatment and this, in turn, makes the use of vitamins and minerals that potentially have immunogenic, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties very important. Therefore, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of nutritional supplements (NS) that compose of sports nutrition supplements, fat burner supplements, dietary supplements and functional foods is quite important. In this context, the factors that determine the use of NS are determined through an online questionnaire applied to 242 academicians working in Süleyman Demirel University and Isparta University of Applied Sciences. Due to the missing data the number of questionnaires are decreased to 159 As the result of the Logit model applied in the study it is determined that income level, the involvement in quarantine process and the thought that ‘those who have proper diet don’t necessitate to use NS’ affect the use of NS positively, while education level, making sports regularly and contact with someone/s with Covid-19 affect negatively. As policy recommendations it is proposed that sports, balanced and healthy eating habits/consciousness should be included in the daily lives of individuals, especially for those living in the cities through campaigns of the related two Ministries (the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) and as the rate of watching television is high public service announcements should be broadcasted. Hence, the problems of perceiving NSs as drugs, the product selection and dosage problems, drug interaction related problems, risks of herbal blends, the risks caused by uncontrolled products and the use of products without a professional advice would be resolved.

Covid-19 Pandemisi Sürecinde Destekleyici Gıda Takviyesi Talebini Etkileyen Faktörlerin Analizi

Year 2021, Volume 10, Issue 4, 3219 - 3242, 30.12.2021
